Druids are ready to rock in Rhosymedre
THE oldest football club in Wales has the newest stadium in the Principality after Cefn Druids unveiled their new ground at The Rock on Sunday.
After 50 years at Plas Kynaston Lane, the Ancients have moved lock, stock and barrel just half a mile across Cefn Mawr High Street to Rhosymedre, where they will play their first game against Penrhyncoch in the Huws Gray Alliance on Saturday.
The state-of-the-art, UEFA-compliant £1.8 million facility boasts a 500-seat grandstand, a large car park and a new 150-seat lounge inside a clubhouse with also has excellent changing rooms for players, male and female referees and medical treatment.
A recently-turfed pitch laid by the same company that recently re-laid Wembley Stadium, will provide one of the best playing surfaces in the Welsh pyramid in a natural setting overlooking the valley below.
Druids were the beneficiaries of Tesco's purchase of their old ground to build a new supermarket, but the move to The Rock was delayed by 12 months due to local residents' objections.
Chairman Brian Mackie and his co-directors are justifiably proud of the new stadium, which represents several years of planning and hard work by the club's board.
"We hope to also to be able to stage concerts and have already been promised schoolboy international matches," says commercial director Dave Bennett.
"With the new football ground and the supermarket, this is an £18 million investment in Cefn Mawr, which can't be a bad thing."

New boys Rhos are flying high
NEWLY-promoted Rhos Aelwyd maintained their unbeaten start to go third in the Huws Gray Alliance with a 2-0 home victory over fellow newboys Rhayader Town.
Second-half goals from Mike Burke and Aaron Edwards did the trick, while Buckley Town won by the same scoreline to extend a miserable start to the season for relegated Porthmadog, who had Geraint Mitchell sent-off at Globe Way as they succumbed to a brace from Jack Challinor.
Reigning champions Llangefni Town have also started poorly and remain pointless after a 2-0 home reverse to Cefn Druids. Mike Cronshaw and Adam Hemp were on target for the Ancients, who will play their first home game at their new stadium next Saturday.
Second half strikes from Gareth Sudlow and Karl Seliaerts gave visitors Caersws the points at Penrhyncoch, while Rhydymwyn gained their first win since promotion at home to Ruthin Town thanks to goals from Mark Gunter and Daffyd Griffith, with Kevin Garland scoring for the visitors.

Rhyl win marred by sickening injury
CONNAH'S Quay and Rhyl continue to maintain a hot pace at the top of the Huws Gray Alliance, both recording home wins on Friday night.
The Nomads beat Flint Town United 4-2 in the Flintshire derby, while the Lillies overcame Llandudno 2-0 in front of a crowd of 449 at Belle Vue, where the game was marred by an early injury to Alec Williams, who played with Prestatyn last season, after an accidental clash of heads with Joe Morgan.
Williams suffered a quadruple fracture of the cheekbone and was taken to hospital.
Something had to give at Belle Vue, where both sides had 100% records going into the game, and it took Rhyl 72 minutes to break the deadlock when John Toner bundled the ball into the net following a goal-mouth scramble before sub Mike Pritchard added the second.
On Deeside, a crowd of 309 watched Gap take a 10th-minute lead only for rivals Flint to respond twice in three minutes with goals from ex-Nomad Jon Kenworthy and Simon Thelwell.
But Quay were back in front before the break through Ben Collins and Andy Olson, with Gary O'Toole adding a fourth early in the second-half.

Three clubs remain 100 percent
THREE clubs have 100 percent records after the second round of Huws Gray Alliance games.
Rhyl ran out 3-1 winners at home to Cefn Druids after taking the lead through Stuart Rudd. Adam Hesp soon levelled for the Ancients, but both sides were reduced to 10-men following a fracas before half-time.
The Lilywhites' John Keegan and Druids' striker Aden Shannon were dismissed, with the hosts scoring through Sam Heenan and Gareth Owen in the second-half.
Gap Connah's Quay built on their 6-0 opening day win with a 3-1 Friday night success at Buckley Town, but needed late goals from Rob Jones and Gary O'Toole to secure the points.
The other 100 percenters are Llandudno, who triumphed 3-2 despite trailing to Iwan Williams and Jack Jones goals at Porthmadog. The visitors hit back through a Lee Thomas brace, both from the penalty spot, both conceded by Mike Foster, and Adie Hoyle grabbed the late winner.
Mark Griffiths scored a hat-trick as Caersws won 4-2 at home to reigning champions Llangefni, while Ruthin gained a 2-2 draw at Penrhyncoch despite the dismissal of Joe Garner.
Jon Kenworthy missed a penalty before Matty Roberts gave Flint Town United the lead at home to Technogroup Welshpool, with Sean Beck sealing a 2-0 win in the 88th-minute.
Former Druids' player-manager Waynne Phillips scored from the spot as Rhos Aelwyd drew 1-1 at home to Guilsfield, while newly-promoted duo Rhayader and Rhydymwyn also drew by the same scoreline.

Perfect start for six-goal Nomads
GAP Connah's Quay made the perfect start to life in the Huw Grays Alliance with a 6-0 hammering of another of last season's relegated Welsh Premier clubs.
The Nomads beat Welshpool 6-0 at the Deeside Stadium with Gary O'Toole and Mike Hayes both scoring twice.
Rhyl did not have matters all their own way at home to Caersws and needed a 43rd-minute Chris Williams goal to take the spoils in a 1-0 win. Stuart Rudd missed several chances for the Lilywhites, Scott Beckett struck the bar and a goal in stoppage time from John Toner was disallowed.
Two more of last season's top flight clubs, Porthmadog and Cefn Druids, shared a goal-less draw at The Traeth.
There was a shock for reigning champions Llangefni Town who slumped 0-1 at home to Ruthin, for whom Stuart Vernon scored the winner.
Llandudno came out on top at Buckley with a 48th-minute Dylan Smith goal, while new boys Rhos Aelwyd celebrated their promotion by beating last season's high fliers Flint Town United 2-1.
Another of the newly promoted sides, Rhydymwyn, drew 1-1 at home to Guilsfield, but Rhayader Town were well-beaten 4-1 at Penrhyncoch on Friday night, with Josh Shaw grabbing a brace.

Strong in fitness race for Rhyl opener
RHYL player-manager Greg Strong faces a race against time to be fit for the Lillies' opener in the Huws Gray Alliance.
Although nursing a strain, the defender (pictured) has not ruled himself out of Saturday's home clash with last season's Welsh Premier adversaries Caersws.
"I'm desperate to be involved as are all of our lads, but it's touch and go so first I'll have a late fitness test," says Strong, who has added Australian trio Nicolas Le Rouco, Pasquale Polistina and goalkeeper Anthony Costa to his squad.
Another relgated outfit, Cefn Druids, have just three of last season's Welsh Premier roster as they face a tricky opening game away to Porthmadog.
Llandudno have been dealt an eve-of-season blow with the news that skipper Craig Hogg will be sidelined with a groin muscle injury for six weeks.
Ex-Airbus trio James McIntosh, Gareth Caughter and Gary McConnell make their debuts for Buckley Town, while Flint Town are away at new boys Rhos Aelwyd.

Welshpool deny rumours of demise
WELSHPOOL coach Benji Evans has insisted rumours of the club's demise are wide of the mark on the eve of the new Huws Gray Alliance season.
And the newly-appointed head coach says he plans to return happier days to Maesydre.
"We have some committed people both on and off the pitch and I believe it can help move Welshpool forward," says Evans, who has joined Graham Evans at the helm in place of Huw Griffiths and Terry Ingram.
Off the pitch the club has also re-organised with Michael Dawkins unveiled as chairman in the summer with son Nigel his vice chairman.
“For many years Technogroup Welshpool have been a club which have finished in the top half of the Welsh Premier and competed against some of the best teams in Wales," he added.
“Due to the re-structure of Welsh football, Technogroup Welshpool find themselves in the Huws Gray Alliance, having finished above the relegation zone which would have been enough to maintain top flight status in any other year.”
Evans’ main aim is to consolidate in the coming season while building bridges with the community.
Attendances dwindled in the club’s final season in the top flight with Evans underlining the club’s priority was to re-connect with the town.
“The main aim of the club is to be the best in Mid Wales and compete in the highest standard to provide local players with a platform to progress and develop.
“In order to achieve this aim the club wishes to build relations with the local community of Welshpool.
“We have lots of ideas to bring people together through football and wish to work in partnership with other sports teams, businesses and organisations to build and develop in the community."
On the pitch the Lilywhites have lost all of last season’s squad with Evans admitting the club was now racing against the clock to assemble a new squad to take Welshpool forward.
“Myself and Graham have come in fairly late and it has been a challenge over the past five weeks.
“We have made progress with several local players on board and we are in the process of signing several more.
“For my part I am looking forward to creating a professional environment at the club which will allow local players to develop with us and ultimately enjoy playing for Welshpool.”

Stanley ponder deal for ex-Rhyl defender
LEAGUE Two outfit Accington Stanley are considering offering a deal to Glenn Hoddle Academy graduate Andrew Owens, who spent the second half of last season at Rhyl.

CEFN Druids will bring down the curtain on 50 years at Plas Kynaston when they host a special match against a team of former Ancients' players on Tuesday.
Organisers hope as many supporters, players and club officials, past and present, will attend the big night either to play or watch the final game on the ground, before the club moves to its new stadium at The Rock.
"We hope to get as many people involved with the club over the years to come down to the ground for what is going to be a special night,” said Druids' boss Huw Griffiths.
"A lot of players from yesteryear have agreed to come back, and it will be great seeing a lot of old faces who have been connected with the club."
Relegated Druids, who host Aberystwyth in their final friendly on Saturday, will play their first three Huws Gray Alliance league games away from home before their move to their new base in September.

Nomads' duo switch roles again
GAP Connah's Quay have announced a reversal of the managerial roles which saw Ken Price take over as manager from Mark McGregor (pictured) during last season.
After successfully attaining his Uefa B licence, McGregor will resume his role as player-manager, with Price returning to his assistant.
The switch was undertaken in order to meet the requirements of the FAW domestic licence, which the Nomads failed to acheive, and to give McGregor more time to work on his coaching qualifications.
"Both Mark and Ken are in full agreement with the arrangements as Nomads continue their pre-season preparations," says a statement from the club.

Rudd featured in the Lilywhites’ 4-3 friendly defeat at Prestatyn Town on Tuesday night.
